Your perfect wedding abroad

Valentine’s Day may have been and gone, but that doesn’t mean romance has passed with it. The wedding season is on the horizon; many couples wait until the summer before tying the knot as they are more likely to win with the weather. However, although predictions for this summer’s sunshine appearance are looking rosy, some couples are no longer taking the risk.

A recent poll by foreign currency exchange company Caxton FX has revealed the top 10 wedding and honeymoon locations in the world. Sri Lanka topped the list, but beating the Caribbean and other ‘tropical paradises’ to the silver medal spot was Cyprus. According to the creators of the survey, Cyprus came in second because of its stunning beach front resorts as well as its tucked away villas, local taverns and unique church and chapel locations which combined unsurprisingly make it an established and firm favourite with the British public.

It’s true that Cyprus is stunning. Its white-washed houses tumbling down towards azure blue Mediterranean waters, dramatic cliffs topped with an abundance of olive and lemon groves and long, calm beaches all equal understated elegance. No wonder it was an island the gods chose as a play ground.

Its history dates back through myriad civilizations to nine thousands years ago and its geographic position between Europe, Asia and Africa give it a rich and diverse culture. It’s also pretty popular with us Brits for other reasons too.

Firstly, it enjoys over 320 days of sunshine a year; only 30 days of rain a year is pretty unimaginable for us lot. It is also just a few hours flight from the UK so perfect for a long weekend as well as a two-week honeymoon package. It has numerous beach-based activities and city sights to choose from so whatever you’re into – lazy beach days or cultural exploration – Cyprus has it and it comes relatively cheap. Thanks to its abundance of good quality hotels, luxury villas and affordable self-catering holiday homes and apartments we can still travel to Cyprus when in the tight grip of recession.
